One of the Nation’s “Most Wired” Hospitals
Improves Service Delivery with Avaya IP Telephony Solution
BASKING RIDGE, N.J. –Avaya
(NYSE:AV), a leading global provider of communications
networks and services for businesses, today announced that
East Texas Medical Center (ETMC) Regional Healthcare system
is using a new Avaya IP telephony network to link remote
facilities, lower costs and improve communications reliability.
ETMC, based in Tyler, Texas, addresses health care needs
for a 12,000-mile surrounding area and was named one of
the nation’s most wired health care facilities for
four years in a row (2000-2003) by Hospitals and Health
Networks, the journal of the American Hospital Association.
With its service area increasing, the challenge for ETMC was to maintain its
high quality of communications, which the health care system considers one of
the underpinnings of its excellent patient care. The Avaya solution gave ETMC
a seamless link for data communications and voice mail systems, enabling the
same dialing plan across all facilities, and allowing the patient care locations
to share clinical data and images.
ETMC upgraded its network using the Avaya Enterprise Branch Connect solution,
including the latest Avaya Internet telephony (IP) and messaging technology.
ETMC now uses IP telephony, which enables voice and data collaboration over a
converged Internet Protocol network, to route its communications over its new
fiber optic network. “In the health care field, communications support
and reliability is absolutely key to enabling us to deliver quality care to patients,” said
Tim Arthur, director of telecommunications, Information Technology Department.
The solution for ETMC was designed and installed by Lantana Communications, an
Avaya Platinum BusinessPartner. In recognition of the critical nature of the
hospital’s communication capabilities, Lantana conducted a network readiness
assessment in advance of fielding the IP telephony solution for ETMC. In addition,
they staged and tested the new Avaya network prior to installation. Although
ETMC’s IT department manages the network from a central point on the main
campus, it relies on Avaya Global Services’ operations center in Denver,
Colo., for around-the-clock network monitoring.
The Avaya Enterprise Branch Connect Solution is a portfolio of products and services
that help companies deliver voice and data applications to multiple branch office
and remote worker locations over a converged network from a centralized location.
The ETMC solution includes Avaya S8700 Media Gateways at the main hospital facility,
linked to the lab, emergency care and pediatrics clinics, which have Avaya S8300
Media Servers that can operate independently in case of a disaster. Three hundred
Avaya 4620 IP telephones are located throughout the main and remote facilities.
An Avaya IP Office at a remote physicians’ clinic is linked to the main
voice network via a T1 line, with a wireless link into the hospital’s data
network via QSIG signaling protocol.
