SIP For Dummies Available For Free Download!
By its very nature, telecommunications changes and grows over time. One of the newest advances is Session Initiation Protocol (SIP). SIP is the glue—the intelligence—that makes advanced communications more robust than ever. (To download a free copy of the book SIP for Dummies, just click here.)

When fully implemented, SIP will create a communications environment with a central directory server. The server knows the communications preferences of each individual and uses this intelligence to make contact. Does the individual prefer contact by PDA? The central directory understands where to start. How about instant messaging? No problem. The knowledge base is aware of this preference. SIP can intelligently contact a work phone, cell phone, pager, instant messaging program, email, PDA, or—if necessary—each in turn.

Companies are incorporating SIP into their products, including those with Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP). Some of the products that will eventually be SIP-enabled (or are now SIP-enabled) include:
  • VoIP phones, gateways, proxies and servers
  • VoIP softphones – phone software programs that run on PCs, PDAs and other devices
  • VoIP PBXs
  • Instant Messaging (IM) programs
  • Videoconferencing Systems

If you would like to know more about how SIP works, there’s a free downloadable copy of SIP for Dummies waiting for you, just click here. And, as always, if you’d like to work directly with a person on our staff, we are always eager to share ideas. Just contact us or call toll-free at 1-800-659-3361

One-in-Five Americans are Disabled. Are You Missing Them?
Statistics now indicate that 18-20% of the US population is considered disabled. Providing equal access through communications is mandated by law. But the ability to create a loyal, talented labor pool and tap into a growing customer base is driven by opportunity.

Communications Accessibility
Avaya has pioneered voice systems, voice mail, automated attendants and interactive voice response systems that provide access to information for all people, regardless of ability. Not only is Avaya the only manufacturer to offer a complete section 508 solution, they have been recognized as the first Fortune 500 Citizen of the Disability World.

Avaya IP Office solutions include:

  • TTY-enabled IP Office VoiceMail pro messaging
  • Connection points for analog, digital and IP telephony endpoints
  • Hearing aid compatible and volume-adjustable digital headsets
  • IP Office Phone Status software that assists the blind and visually impaired
For more information on how Lantana can help you become compliant with the law, find new employees, and tap into a ready customer base, please contact us.

"Avaya is the only manufacturer who offers a complete, section 508 compliant solution for the small and medium business marketplace"

Technology, Disability & the Law
Not only is the disabled population a growing customer base, the ability to communicate with them is required by law. Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act and Section 255 of the Telecommunications Act mandate equal access communications solutions.

The law considers technology accessible if people with disabilities can use a product as easily as those without disabilities.

The key legislation that defines these standards includes Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act, Section 255 of the Telecommunications Act, and other state and international legislation. Section 508 requires that electronic and information technology developed or purchased by the Federal Government be accessible by people with disabilities.

For more information on accessibility, visit the Federal Government website at www.section508.gov.
